Harold D. Stratton, Jr. is a partner at the Washington, DC office of Dykema. His practice focuses on federal and state regulatory and litigation matters, with an emphasis on consumer product safety issues and other federal regulatory matters. He most recently served as Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Stratton began his legal career in 1977 as an associate and then a partner at Coors, Singer, and Broullire, PA, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At age twenty-eight, he was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives, where he served four terms. During his tenure in the House, he founded Stratton & Barnett, PA, where he served as senior partner until he was elected Attorney General for the State of New Mexico. As Attorney General from 1987-1990, Stratton prosecuted the then-largest consumer action in the history of the office. He has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and courts of other jurisdictions.

In 1991, Stratton founded Stratton & Cavin, PA, and directed the firm's complex commercial litigation and governmental law; oil, gas, and natural resources law; and governmental and administrative law practice.

President George W. Bush nominated Stratton to be Chairman of the CPSC, and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2002. As head of the federal agency responsible for protecting the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products, Stratton worked with foreign governments and industry groups to develop and implement international safety standards and policies.

Stratton has served on the Western Conference of the Council of State Governments, the National Conference of State Legislators, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, the New Mexico Judicial Council, and the BLM Citizens Advisory Committee. He authored a number of publications and articles including Office of the Attorney General: History, Powers & Responsibilities 1845-1990 and Report of the Attorney General: Crime in New Mexico.

Stratton earned a B.A. in geology and a J.D. from the University of Oklahoma. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1976, and in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1973-1981. He is a member of the Cherokee Nation.
