Before you pop that multivitamin, take a minute to read this new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Being that multivitamins are the most commonly used supplements in the developed world, the goal of the study was to determine whether multivitamin-multimineral treatment was associated with increased risk of mortality in adults.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials from March to October of 2012, looking at daily mutivitamin-multimineral supplementation for a year or more. The meta-analysis included 21 trials for a total sample of 91,000 individuals. Results showed no effect of mutivitamin-multimineral supplementation on all-cause mortality as well as no effect on mortality due to vascular causes or cancer.

ACSH s Dr. Ruth Kava sums up the results, saying, This is nothing new. And although taking a multivitamin may not hurt you, it s not likely to help you either.
