Some self-absorbed gym rats will go to extreme lengths to look like bigger idiots more ripped than the other self-absorbed gym rats scurrying around. Sort of like male peacocks attracting females by preening with their feathers on full display. For many men, bodybuilding is an obsession, maybe even a sickness. Some of these guys are willing to do just about anything to look "better," even if it means turning themselves into muscle-bound chemistry labs. All that is required is Internet access and a credit card.

The number of anabolic (muscle-building) products available online is staggering. If you Google "muscle building supplements" you'll be rewarded with 410,000 hits. Leave out the quotation marks and that number burgeons to 90 million. Pretty crazy, right?...

For the last 17 years, the United States government has given organic food corporations a key ally within their halls. But things may get a little more difficult now that Miles McEvoy, deputy administrator of USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP), is stepping down.

If you are not aware, organic food has long had its own special section inside USDA - the National Organic Standards Board.(1) In the 1990 Farm Bill was a then-obscure handout for the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. It created a National Organic Program under USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) to define organic farming practices and create a list of organic production inputs so food could claim it "Meets USDA Organic Requirements." it was such an afterthought...

Somewhere along the way critical reasoning and a healthy dose of skepticism were supplanted by tacit acceptance as fact press releases and publications generated from academic institutions, those “perfectly” credentialed and arbitrarily deemed scientifically “pure.” To do so actually undermines the scientific method and potential advancement, discovery and innovation. It can also place the public in harm’s way.

Yet, with the current competition today, it is no surprise corner-cutting and mastery of how to get published has evolved statistical tricks for those in the know to optimize their chances. The latest example from Harvard will be discussed here. Since publishers are enabling these behaviors, arming the media and public with tools to separate the wheat from the chaff is...

Flight operations for the F-35 fighter jet were suspended until further notice due to multiple episodes of apparent oxygen deprivation of pilots. Fortunately, back-up oxygen systems of the F-35A Lightning II fighters were employed successfully in all instances and the pilots navigated their planes to safety.

The U.S. Air Force takes this very seriously, as it must given the catastrophic potential of pilot hypoxia— which I will shortly describe in detail. A multidisciplinary team of experts including, but not limited to the following will be reviewing air craft technology to pilot clinical status to gear deficiencies, for instance: aerospace engineers, physiologists, aeromedical specialists, maintainers, Lockheed Martin, Naval Air Systems Command, Air Force Life Cycle Management...

With Memorial Day weekend and peak drowning season upon us, there is no better time than the present to debunk some myths about how we drown.

And, it isn’t how you would think.

An average of 3,536 fatal unintentional (non-boating) drownings occur each year in the United States inflicting anguish that could, in many cases, be prevented. Add on to this the 332 who succumb annually to boating-related incidents. Since over half of drowning victims get admitted to the hospital or transferred for comprehensive care, the often long-term devastating consequences of nonfatal drowning events will be elucidated here as well. Buzzwords abound these days even in the drowning arena. It seems the topic has gotten branded. Terms like “silent drowning,” “secondary drowning” or...

CLAUS, SANTA

Date of Birth (DOB):  Immortal

Medical Record #:  12-24-0000

This letter reflects the official summary of SANTA CLAUS’ (aka St. Nick) recent health visit to determine medical fitness to serve as himself on Christmas Eve in a global capacity.  As the Director of Medicine and a Board-Certified physician at the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH), I can...

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), an activist group known for nuisance lawsuits related to health issues and scaremongering just about every food in the modern world (1)is demanding that the U.S. Department of Agriculture put warning labels on...bacon.

That's right, though every reputable health body has debunked the weirdly pseudoscientific claim by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that sausage and other processed meats will cause more cancer, CSPI, a self-appointed corporate "...

Systems engineer Richard A. "Red" Lawhern, Ph.D., is an advocate for pain patients and frequently discusses opioid prescription policy. This is about his piece, "A Report Card On the American Healthcare System" and is his opinion.

As an ancient Chinese curse would have it, we live in “interesting” times.  Even the most casual reading of news and popular literature must convince us of the premise of a fascinating movie from a few years ago:  “The Gods Must Be Crazy.”  Nowhere, I think, is this more evident than in American healthcare.

American public commentary on health care in 2016 seems dominated by “Obamacare” (the US Affordable Care Act), and its impacts on rising health care cost. Politically conservative voices would repeal the act (or “replace” it...

The development of antibiotics and other antimicrobial therapies is arguably the greatest achievement of modern medicine. However, overuse and misuse of antimicrobial therapy predictably leads to resistance in microorganisms. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus species (VRE) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have emerged. Certain CRE species are resistant to multiple antibiotics, and have been deemed superbugs in the news.

Alternative therapies have been used to treat infections since antiquity, but none are as reliably safe and effective as modern...

What Is Milk?

Milk* is a nutritious food. It is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, and vitamin D and a good source of protein, vitamin A, potassium, and several B vitamins. Milk and foods made from milk (yogurt and cheese) make up one of the five basic food groups included in the U.S. government's Food Guide Pyramid. The Pyramid calls for two to three servings from...
