Antibiotic misinformation matters because unnecessary antibiotic use contributes to antimicrobial resistance and its growing public health toll. However, antibiotic myths are more complicated than a collection of bad facts. Some are wrong; others began as reasonable medical advice and persisted even after better evidence emerged. In other words, at least some antibiotic misinformation originated not on social media, but in the doctor’s office.
