Attendees of food safety summit in Baltimore sickened

Food-Poisoning-e1345758031881How s this for irony? Over 100 attendees of a food safety summit in Baltimore reported suffering from gastrointestinal problems after attending the conference. The conference, which took place at the Baltimore Convention Center, was attended by about 1300 individuals.

Investigation was spurred after four attendees contacted the Baltimore City Health Department saying they were suffering from nausea and diarrhea. Following these claims, the health department sent a survey to those who attended the summit. Of the 400 responses they received, 100 reported symptoms.

Although the state health department has not yet found the culprit, after inspecting the center and its in-house catering company, they issued a violation for condensation dripping from an ice machine. They are continuing to investigate whether the illness was caused by food or was transmitted from person to person.

ACSH s Dr. Josh Bloom felt compelled to post this on his Facebook page, where some of the comments were rather amusing: It was a conspiracy. Followed by, There must have been a second puker, and What was the control group? The people who didn t have the fish? (see: Airplane!, 1980). It went downhill from there.
