All of my readers seem to enjoy the monthly birthstone series, so let's keep it going. Unfortunately, those of you born in October may feel cheated; the month has two birthstones, but I'm only going to discuss one of them: opal.

In today's politics, there's red, and there's blue. Most of the time, they have little in common.

Just in time for you Augustinians, the birthstone for August is peridot. The good news is that it's really beautiful. The better news is that buying one for your special someone probably won't require a second mortgage.
