Is your sports bra toxic?

Is your sports bra toxic? Before you toss your entire workout wardrobe, let's talk about the science behind the claims.

Recent headlines have raised concerns about bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in some synthetic fabrics, including sports bras, leggings, and other activewear. But detecting BPA in your clothing doesn't exactly mean it's putting your health at risk. Lab studies show that BPA can leach from certain fabrics, particularly when exposed to sweat and friction. But detecting a chemical is not the same as demonstrating harmful exposure. A 2023 study examining 120 garments estimated that exposure remained below levels of concern, even under worst-case conditions. Scientists and regulatory agencies continue to debate acceptable BPA exposure limits, but there's an important distinction between a chemical's potential to cause harm and the actual risk posed by everyday exposure.

The bottom line: Finding BPA in your sports bra doesn't automatically make it dangerous. Dose, exposure, and evidence matter.
