Dispatch: Binge drinking and high blood pressure: double trouble?

CNN reports on a study suggesting that men with high blood pressure who imbibe more than six drinks in one sitting may double their risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack, while those that consume 12 drinks at a time increase their risk by five-fold. The study, published in yesterday’s Stroke, followed 6,100 South Korean men over 55 years of age for 20 years, but did not consider “the timing of the binge drinking and subsequent cardiovascular events.”

Going into the weekend, ACSH discourages binge drinking and ignoring one’s blood pressure. “We recommend that everyone have their blood pressure checked a few times per year and get treated even if it’s only slightly high,” advises ACSH's Dr. Gilbert Ross.
