The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) (aka: the “Food Police”) is threatening to sue McDonald’s for including toys with their Happy Meals, citing supposed violations to consumer protections laws in a number of states. Starting July 1, people who buy cigarettes in New York will have to fork over an extra $1.60 per cigarette pack in state taxes according to a new law passed yesterday by the Legislature. This will bring the total cost of cigarettes to approximately $12.00 a pack.

ACSH staffers were pleased to learn the FDA has approved a new HIV combination assay that allows earlier detection of HIV and AIDS. Current HIV tests have a “window period” of two to eight weeks during which time a newly-infected person can test negative for the disease. Abbot Laboratories’ new test cuts seven to 20 days from that window period.
