Brominated Flame Retardants: A Burning Issue

By ACSH Staff — Aug 09, 2006
A class of brominated flame retardants known as polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) are under assault from environmental activists and regulators both in the United States and overseas. Flame retardants give people more time to escape a fire by delaying flashover, the explosive-like eruption of flames responsible for most of the fatalities and property damage in residential fires. PBDEs are particularly effective flame retardants and have long been widely used in the manufacture of televisions and other electrical equipment, furniture, and mattresses.

Soaking the Taxpayers

This piece appeared on NationalReview.com. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Thursday that it has agreed to let General Electric delay the dredging of the Hudson River -- which the agency had ordered several years ago in order to further lower the trace levels there of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The delay would allow the company to complete work on a "sediment processing facility" by 2007.

Baked Snacks Not Necessarily Healthier; Low-Calorie Fries with That?

By ACSH Staff — Jul 26, 2006
A July 19, 2006 article by John Johnston quotes ACSH's Jeff Stier: "Egged on by the food police, people think they are doing the healthier thing -- and are willing to sacrifice and eat the baked snacks." The tone in Jeff Stier's voice is filled with the irony at the word "sacrifice." However, those "sacrifices" are in vain, according to Stier, associate director of the American Council of Science and Health (ACSH).

ACSH Applauds FDA for Taking a Stand Based on Science

By ACSH Staff — Jul 24, 2006
The Senate is currently considering legislation which would prohibit the FDA from including on FDA scientific advisory boards scientists "with industry ties" to drug manufacturers (the House already approved this legislation). Today, FDA's Dr. Scott Gottlieb emphatically opposed this proposed legislation, declaring that it would deprive FDA of advice from the best and brightest scientists in America.
