We ve commented before on studies that demonstrate the benefits of bariatric surgery for weight loss and remission of type 2 diabetes. Most of these studies have not followed the participants for more than a few years, leaving open the question of whether or not these benefits are maintained. A new study, one that followed participants for 18 years, has just been published in the latest edition of JAMA.

Throughout their 27-year history, statins have been the subject of considerable discussion and controversy. They have been regarded as dangerous, unproven drugs on one end of the spectrum to miracles that prevent heart attacks on the other, and much in between. Now, a group from Oregon State University s College of Pharmacy in Portland claims that statin use is associated with decreased exercise in men.

Giving a combination vaccine, MMR-V (MMR plus varicella-chickenpox) vaccines at one time as opposed to separately, increases the risk of febrile seizures in infants. But the absolute risk is extremely low either way, much lower than the risk of measles, and such seizures have no significant sequelae.
